What do you think? I can. I can learn this. I am good enough. I am smart. It's OK to make mistakes. Or I can't do it anyway. I am so stupid. I should be perfect. Who do I actually think I am? Our thought patterns are learned and developed from an early age. Patterns of thought become patterns of action. Together, these patterns create a belief system that we use to explain, categorise and create the world we live in. Unlike Konrad Lorenz's geese, we humans are able to outgrow the initial imprinting. We can develop cognitively, emotionally and spiritually and question ourselves and our beliefs. We can learn. Learning requires some prerequisites: Interest in the subject and an open mind, time, trust, encouragement, practice, a sense of "I can learn" and above all: making mistakes. Our self-image and our sense of being able to achieve and create also depends on, and was partly shaped by, our parents. If mistakes were punished or criticism, ridicule or disinterest were the order of the day, thought patterns may have emerged that stand in the way of learning and living our own lives. No matter what our experiences have been, everything can change, nothing has to stay the way it is if we don't want it to! I know from my own experience that it is never too late to learn. The older we get, the longer some things might take, but what's the rush? Be true to yourself. Love what you do. Do what you love. Today.
